POLL: How do you PROFITABLY use your HOME studio?

not really a fair poll for the current world of music

I do music for games/film/tv, mix/compose my own work and for others, and i loan the place out for friends to mix/work in, even tracked an accordion session there this weekend-
hell i do most that on my laptop on a plane too

but

while i do profit from it - it really functions as my creative place - sort of a place to recharge without concern for anything other then the pure joy of sound

I'm doing some cassette transfer work this summer. Did it last summer too. I'll make about 2 grand for it. Not bad.

How do you calculate a rate for this kind of work? What do you charge? Been thinking of offering this kind of service since the only duplication company in town is now defunct.

I am doing the project for the Iowa Writer's Workshop. They have hundreds of cassettes of readings that have accumulated over the years. I figured each reading would be about 45 min to an hour and asked for $20 a tape. So far it's working out great. If I were doing it beyond this project I would try and make sure I was making at least $20 an hour and then base the rate on the amount of work that needed done, either per tape, or by the hour if there was a lot of clean up, etc. that needed done to the source.

I would think a flat rate / project rate (versus hourly) would be best....

Mostly the same as Thieves, here. I've recorded a few things for some other friends and made a couple of bucks, but it's mostly for our own music. No clock, (limited gear, but no clock).
