The lyrics to "Glass Onion" are pretty terrible.

My God, I can't believe this. That song was playing at work yesterday and I went on a mini tirade about how this song represents everything that was wrong about the seventies. And that line in particular! You know that thought by Hunter Thompson about the cultural wave cresting and then rolling back to California? I think there may be a connection. The exact moment may have been when Dennis DeYoung saidjohnny7 wrote:Yes, that one always made me feel like stabbing a knife in my foot.lysander wrote:My vote for best Styx lyric:

He must have been really board when he wrote that.

The question in my mind is who influenced who? Did Dennis DeYoung influence ELP and Peter Sinfield and their "Pirates!" from Works, Vol. I or the other way around? Both records were released the same year.
I think "Pirates!" is far more laughable and cringe-inducing than Styx's "Come Sail Away" not only for the lyrics but the pretentious use of a full orchestra as a back-up. Just check these lyrics:

As for "Glass Onion", I've always viewed it as a tongue-in-cheek reaction to fans trying to find hidden and profound meaning in all the Beatles' lyrics.

I've said it before: ELP could have been an awesome band, had they simply replaced three of their musicians and written/recorded entirely different music.

some people feel the same way about Rush and The Police.dwlb wrote:I've said it before: ELP could have been an awesome band, had they simply replaced three of their musicians and written/recorded entirely different music.
i'm not one of those people, however.
