Plus, in addition to that badass guitar intro, if you catch that wide shot toward the end you'll see she's doing all that high-kicky rock star shit in 5-inch heels!superaction80 wrote:Come on, homegirl...dwlb wrote:Nancy Wilson kicks all the ass.

Yep, them girls sure kick ass - and Nancy can kick my ass anytime........as long as she takes off those 5 inch spikes first. Then again some of you might be into that kind of stuff. BTW, sorry about the apples and oranges or scientology comparison. I just wanted to point out how good a song Magic Man is for production and arrangement emulation. Also, I tune into both tapeop and gearslutz, so the Katy Perry thread may have been something I read on gearslutz vs. tapeop. Anyway, stirring up controversy is fun. I remember reading somewhere that both Nancy and Ann were dating two of the band members - Ann, I think with the lead guitarist, and as pointed out, Nancy with the drummer. They perceived they were being mistreated/used and at the end of a show in the dressing room things came to a head and the girls booted those guys out of the band. I think that's they way it went down. I sure bet those guys ended up regretting things. Then again, I guess you would have to have been there, done that to know. ---- It's only rock and roll, but I like it!!!!

i don't think i could be friends with you in real life. i'm not even a big heart fan and that synth breakdown is easily in my top 5 most awesome uses of synth in recorded music.ledogboy wrote:I dunno, I never have cared for the breakdown. It feels awkward to me, especially the synth thing. But them girls can sing!
anyone hear the girl talk track where he samples the breakdown? it's really great.
Where have I been for the last day?
I couldn't agree more about "Magic Man."
I even wrote an article about it last year. Check it out:

Last summer some Harley-ridin' dude came up to me after one of our shows and started quizzing me about Rockabilly. (That's what we play...) His plan was to set up a band for casino gigs, he was looking for a good slappin' bass player, and wanted to know about pay out at typical shows. It was only after I was happily telling him about the music business that i found out he was Michael Derosier!song-writer wrote:Yep, them girls sure kick ass - and Nancy can kick my ass anytime........as long as she takes off those 5 inch spikes first. Unmitigated dorkery alert:
Sure that mini-moog wasn't a single track with two of the oscillators tuned to a 5th?
Prog out with your cog out.
I think it starts with three tracks at the beginning (the third track just hits the high note at the end), and then the other two notes fall away and you're left with a monophonic (but probably two oscillators, because I can hear a little chrousy beating) synth solo.superaction80 wrote:Great piece.Rodgre wrote:Where have I been for the last day?

Great article, Rodgre. Thanks.
When I said they threw everything but the kitchen sink into the record, I meant the added synth or moog at the end (after all the great guitar work) which you guys already talked about. On my first ever listen, I thought they were about done with the song and then they had that part - which I think is great. My impression was that they picked up this idea from listening to Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's "Lucky Man", which I am almost positive was recorded beforehand.
Hey, I'm sorry if I short-changed Ann when I said Nancy could kick my ass anytime - so Ann can kick it twice and leave her spiked heels on to boot (pun intended) as my punishment. Both sisters are fine ladies and Ann's voice is beyond awesome!!!!
I have this old book about synthesisers that has a picture of Ann and Nancy with a Sequential Circuits DrumTraks drum machine. I guess they messed with it when songwriting. Prince used one for some of his recordings. I still have mine, but also have a Boss Dr. 660 and Boss Dr. 880.

As long as we are being dorks... the Wilsons aren't from Canada, thought they may have lived there briefly. They are mostly known for living down here in Seattle!toaster3000 wrote:are those two reasons sisters from Canada, Chris?

There is a spot in "Barracuda" where some successive (three from what I recollect) 3 rolls of the drums come in at real high volume at the end of a song segment and just supercharge the song to an even higher level of excitement - at least in my opinion. You can tell a lot of work went into arranging, rehearing, and getting their songs recorded, mixed, and mastered.
Now, where can I order one of those outfits the bass player was wearing in the video. I just got to be careful not to put it on upside down.
