cheap as hell headphpones that will take a beating

Post by thieves » Wed Oct 22, 2008 11:13 am

so, i've found myself playing drums to a click live a whole lot lately, and i keep breaking or blowing out various cheap sets of cans. i'm looking for something that covers my ears and has a relatively large driver that can take a whole lot of signal. i don't really want to go in-ear, because i play other instruments on stage and like to keep a set of ear plugs in during sets. are there any sub-$30 headphones anyone could recommend? i just don't want to feel terrible if and when i spill beer on them or something.

this is totally the selling point:
They can hit 105dB (loud enough to cause ear damage)
(remember, i'll be using them with ear plugs in, no lectures please)

They seem to be pretty well-liked around here; the key is that they sound pretty good for the price.

Note that you'll probably need an extension cable, as the included one is pretty short. They're ugly, too.

But for semi-disposable headphones, I can't think of anything better.

+1 on the moreme's. I have a couple of pairs.

Their warranty on them is crazy good. And they're pretty rugged, sound decent for 20 dollar cans. By all means get the extension cable too.

yeah, i use an extension cable in a live setting anyway, because the place where i plug in the headphones is almost never right by my kit. i think i'm going to order one pair, and if i like them, order a few more before i do any more sessions with the band.

I got mine from Mercenary since they had some kind of special on them. Might be worth checking out.

i ordered a pair of these yesterday. i'm looking forward to seeing how well they work, as i think i completely blew out my old set at last night's gig.

these came in the mail saturday and i got to try them out during band practice yesterday. exactly what i needed. i was initially a bit worried about the isolation, as they aren't super great at that, but damn do they go LOUD! i had earplugs in and the headphones turned up pretty loud but not all the way, and i could barely hear myself playing drums, but the click track was right there in my ear.

Hmm... earplugs and headphones cranked up - sound like an idea I should have thought of but hadn't. Do you get any click bleed into the overheads?

i'm sure i would if i were tracking, but this is strictly a 'live' setup. pretty much everyone on stage can hear when the song is going to start from the bleed in my phones.

i bought 5 from mercenary about two years ago. mine have been used and abused in this time period. they've been dropped, cranked for hours, kicked, taped up to heads, etc. and this whole time i dont think i've gotten any solid complaints.

only weeks ago, after the past two years of heavy use i've had to pop them open to fix a loose wire on the inside.

they're great.. just stock up on extenders!

Fostex T20 are the cheapest headphones ever made considering that 30 years later you can still find parts to repair them and, for the very fact that they're repairable!
