So, I found this on the site of a studio here in town that I shall not name:

I've actually never personally used a C12, but I'm pretty sure it's a side-address mic. Is it possible someone owns a $5000 mic and doesn't know which end to sing into?

At least they've got their priorities in order:

It's quite possible that the shockmount slipped.

If the shockmount had slipped, the pop filter wouldn't be where it is.

And no, it's not just a picture - it's a picture the studio put on its own website to advertise its services. Surely this wouldn't be done w/ a screwed up placement if anyone knew better, right?

Jeez, if I can't be snarky about mic placement here, where can I be?

Besides, there's already at least two threads going about weird mic placements right now...

It could have been angled down at the singers mouth. In which the filter would have been placed lower.

I can see a photographer not knowing its side-address. What's odd is the studio putting it up on their site.

How is that shock mount suspended? I don't see it being held up by anything...

You know, we're all making a lot of assumptions here. Maybe Verne Troyer was in the control room during vocal overdubs and the producer decided that tracks of his drunken stumbling were what the song needed right then. And since the C12 was up already, they just adjusted it to the appropriate angle.

Just a thought, it could be set using the omnidirectional pattern, and to quell some sibilance, they decided it sounded best off the top. LDC mics in omni often have some accentuated high end in some positions.
