What does everyone out there think of the new Universal Audio 2-610? Also does anyone make a copy of the Telefunken V76?

The Universal Audio 2-610 is hands down the best dual pre amp unit on the market. Earthy and warm. The broadband eq is great and the dual ohm settings can really provide a better match mic for mic. These rock. I don't know about the V76 knock-off. You can still find single Telefunken pre amps for sale, but you'll typically need to have them racked for power and attenuation controls.

Another vote for the 2-610. I love it. Sounds great on many different sources. Haven't tried it on acoustic guitar, but on vox and drums, it sounds great. The DI is great for bass, too.

I have 2 UA 2-610s and use them on everything except bass. In my use they sound a little too undefined/muddy/soft when micing my Ampeg B-15 with an RE-20. They can also be a little noisy when using a ribbon mic with a quiet source (which is why I picked up a Phoenix Audio DRS-2).

It may not be true, but I always feel like the drawmer 1960 is a good poor man's(sort of) telefunken. Especially when you put telefunken 12ax7's in there.

I actually really like the mic pre on the drawmer 1960. I am not a freak about tubes, or gear in general, and the 1960 seems to work well for most things, and I love it for bass.

the 2-610 is cool too.

it's just wonderful...got mine a month ago...my 1st "really nice piece of gear"
vox through a studio projects c1 are amazing...I'm very happy with it . Sm57's on acoustic gtr thru the 2-610 are fantastic.

I haven't heard one myself, but I'd bet it is dead on.

Tab-Funkenwerk is working on a modern/cloned version of the V76, but it won't be out for a few months from what i understood. Apparently it is a bitch and a half to build.

Ok, the UA610 sounds great by itself, but how does it mix with solid state pres? Can one use both on the same track easily or not?

Khai, what are you suggesting? Chaining the preamps together? Or are you asking if you can record with the Universal 610 and then playback through a solid state line amp?

I record through the 2610 and play back through solid state. I assume thats what you're suggesting. Sounds great to me.

My 610s are not racked so I can take em in the live room, close to the source. Then feed line level straight to tape or tools.

I find them a little too mushy in conjuction with a tube mic on some vocalists, but the 500ohm impedance is great for ribbons.

Sorry for not making myself clear, I was just wandering if recording some instruments with the 2-610 and others with non-tube pres for the same song was sonically nice. People often come to the conclusion that you should use either one type or the other on the same song, not both. True????....

I've been thinking of buying a 610 for quite a while as I LUVV valve sounding records, but each time I come across a record that was done on it, I don't like its sound that much. I hate the sound of drums on LA Woman, and also hate the sound of acoustic guitar on Bill Putnam Jr's last Radar Bros CD. Is it because of the way they mixed or because of the pres? I don't know. I love Pet sounds though.

No, mixing preamps on different sources for a song is a GREAT idea, especially when dealing with preamps with as much character as the 610 module.

If all of the tracks for a song were done on a 610, it would sound, well... 610-ey. By accenting a sound with a preamp, you've become a better engineer.

And buying a preamp for who uses it and who doesn't* is not the best idea. Find one in your budget that smiles at you, and that you enjoy spending quality time with.

BTW, I love my 2-610, can't use it on everything, but anything that needs a little sandpaper.... yum.

(*ok, if NO ONE buys a preamp, there's probably a good reason for it.)
