Recorderman phase?

Post by LeedyGuy » Wed Jan 07, 2009 11:58 am

So I'm trying recordman drum mic technique for the first time and I love it, but I cannot get the "overheads" in phase for beans. I have to flip phase in Reaper to get them to be in phase. The way I see it, the way the mics are facing, there is no way things could be in phase. I am sorta solving the problem by flipping it in post, but I was just wondering about everyone else's experience.

Hmm. Recorderman is all about getting the snare and kick in phase. If it sounds better after flipping the phase, I'd venture to say you're doing something wrong in tracking.

That being said, if it sounds better flipping the phase, then by all means do it.

Are you measuring the distance from the kick beater to each OH and making sure it is the same? That should put them in phase.
Mmm, lung butter.

I totally did all that! It's kinda weird, but I am going to re-measure it again.

Maybe one of your cables is out of phase. Try swapping cables one at a time or borrow a cable tester.

I've actually had 2 of the same mics out of phase. We have several KM84s and one was opposite for some reason. It was probably worked on some time in the past. It took years to figure it out.

That would be wild if my mics or cables are out of phase.

Signal chain:

2 Russian Oktavas with Red capsules->monster pro100->2 solo 610 (phase set to in) -> balanced XLR to 1/4" -> Neutrik patchbay -> balanced patch cables -> MOTU 828

I see this as a pretty typical setup and I have never had my mics modded or my cables messed with. Hmmmmmm.

My balanced XLR to 1/4 could be the only culprits for phase weirdness as I am not the original owner of those but I just checked them in my EWI Bug Catcher and they are golden.

Shouldn't they be fine relative to each other though?

I guess I just assumed he meant the mics are out of ? with each other. I suppose reading it now he could mean the pair relative to the other drum mics.

That's what i thought, both oktavas relative to the others.

@chuckfurok: Oktava mics are Pin 3 positive, reversed phase.

WTF?!

Soooooo I should always record my 012s phase reversed so that I have a fighting chance of being in phase with my kick and snare mic?

Even so, it doesn't make a difference if they are BOTH phase flipped when trying to get them in phase with eachother.

True.

Even the most known oktava mods stay pin 3 positive.

Shouldn't you listen before recording, or if working alone check and if something needs to bew flipped, do it at the mic pre and track the rest of the tunes that way?
