What does everyone think about the MXL microphones?

My only LDC is an MXL v57. I use it as a drum overhead and a vocal mic, and i like it. It does the job.

I agree with timbaier. the 603 is great for the $. I also have a pair of 2001's, to say that their treble response is ragged is an understatement.

They sound really good on acoustic instruments and I also have had success using them on guitar amps at a lower volume...

Really good mics for that price.

I've got the 603 and it does rule, a V67 named homer and a 2001 which I don't very much care for.

old school drum recipe: mxl 603 over top or kit oktava 319 3' in front of kick amplify and season to taste...

I like them. I think that they are the best of the cheap mics. I would buy them just to give them the Royer Mod. The capsules are pretty decent, but the components are not too good.

Actually they sound ok. Some of these cheap chinese mics are in the same price range as things like SM-57 or Betas. They make prime candidates for DIY mods by Royer or Dorsey. Search google and read for hours.......

for the $70 i paid for them, i absolutely love my 603s's. my only complaint is they lack a pad and hpf.

I've got the 2001 and for what it is (a cheap LDC) i think it's great. As long as you don't expect it to be a U87 you'll be very happy with it.
I find it a bit harsh for vocals (it's evil on a female vocal) but great for room mics, overheads, kick drum, acoustic and electric guitar.
It's the same price as a lot of dynamics and will give you another color to work with.

where can i get a 603 or pair of 603s without buying the 2001 with it? usually i shop MF but if i can get just the 603 elsewhere i will. they only sell it with the 2001 right now.thanks

i think for a while filament had some deal going where they hand selected mxl mics, as they were very near to the factory. not sure if that's still going on, but they may still have more responsive customer service than 8thstreet if you get a marginal mic. and i just read something on r.a.p. where someone (wayne?) from mxl was offering to refund someone's money who simply didn't like their 603s.

oh, and dont forget- the last issue of tapeop had the new royer mod for shoving a tube up in the 603.

Can anyone tell me, regarding the sonic characteristic, how the V69 stands up against the MXL-2001 with the Royer/TapeOp modification?
