Desert Island - A pair of...

Post by kingmetal » Mon Jan 19, 2009 12:58 am

I know this is not a particularly original topic, but hopefully it hasn't been too beaten to death.

If you could only have a pair of one mic in your mic locker forever, what would it be?

I don't have a really great answer myself, since I'm very much lacking in the experience that many of you have - and to tell you the truth, I'm picking a mic that I just really want for what I'm doing right now, but I've always been really enamored by the DPA 4006. With a pair of those and some really clever mixing I think I could survive.

Plus, they're supposedly nearly impossible to destroy (I've seen someone stir coffee with a B&K measurement mic, which I understand is roughly the same design).

One day I will have two! For now, my 4060s will have to suffice (and they do! they're lovely).

On a desert island?

I would also want a very durable and versatile tool.

For recording in stereo.
For protection from predators.
For drawing "S.O.S." in the sand.
For hunting wild game.
For sharpening spearheads.
For stunning fish.
For counter-weighting a snare.
For breaking open coconuts.
For grinding with a mortar.
For rolling dough.
For digging a fire pit.
For sparking flint.
For hammering together a shelter.
For pounding stakes.
For excavating a French drain.
For beating laundry.
For clearing a way through the jungle.
For confusing the natives with magic.
For signaling rescue aircraft with semaphore.
For capturing it all.
Forever.

The Electro-Voice 635A.

It is a lifesaver.

This is an awesome response.

And as for the AT4050, I've never used one myself, but I think I need to check one out pronto. Seems really versatile for the price.

RCA 77DX
thats just my favorite mic of all time, and it can do omni as well as figure 8.
or a pair of Beyer 201's becuase they are great on guitars or drums
or TAB 421's
becuase they are great on everything. I would record a record with just those.
or a pair of bottle rocket stage 2s with all the bottle caps.
(havent heard them but I just love Blue stuff)

The list of different mics that I've used at some point would be absurdly long, but it didn't take me any time at all to write AT4050.

I guess if the FET47 was multi-pattern, it would be a good runner-up.
