basic cheap/free recording software for OS X?

Post by marqueemoon » Wed Feb 25, 2009 7:17 pm

Hello, Tape Op. I have been gone for a long time.

Maybe it's time is near to say goodbye to 9.2 and Pro Tools free. I have a G3 iBook that is still kicking and is going to have to do for a while.

If I could mix 8 tracks at 16/44.1 and get away with a plugin or two on each I would be happy.

Yes I am serious, sadly.

What interface are you using?

Wouldn't garageband do what you are asking? I'm not a mac guy but I work with plenty of people who do demos in garageband and send them to me to learn songs all the time.

It would, sure, but I find GB hard to record in. It's easy for making loop-based stuff, but the recording functions are confounding to me.
That's why I ask re: his interface. If he's using a Motu interface I used to use Audiodesk and really liked it. It's basically DP without midi and fewer plugs, but totally useable and nice, particularly for free.

i guess there's also Reaper, which isn't exactly free, but you can use it for free, right?

GB is really easy to use, as is Reaper.

Garageband will already be on your new mac. Use it. It's simple and powerful.

The OP didn't say they were getting a new Mac. In fact, they said the G3 would have to do for a while longer.

I'm going to be the guy who recommends Audacity. It's free.

Save that $50 you might have spent on Reaper, (which is still in Beta for OSX), and be 5% of the way to buying a MacBook.

Another vote for Audacity.
Really simple, efficient, and acts like a recorder.

Nice

Garageband is not part of OSX? I didn't realize it didn't come with it. As I said, I am not a mac guy (I jumped ship to win 98 after os8.1). In that case, audacity or reaper (though not free, but cheap and powerful, the mac version will get to full functionality soon). Also, every month in computermusic magazine there's some recording programs, I believe a version of energyxt is on there.

the basic version of Logic is like a souped up GarageBand.

Garageband is part of iLife, which comes free and pre-installed on Macs now. But it's not a part of OSX, per se. You can uninstall any of the iLife programs without affecting the OS or any other programs. Sort of like how Microsoft Works comes free on almost all PC's, and you could uninstall the Works Spreadsheet program without affecting the rest of the PC.

But I don't think it came with G3's.

Yeah, but I don't know that I'd be too confident about a current version of Garageband or Logic running on a G3. They both require OSX 10.5, can a G3 handle that?

Do you have an audio interface?
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

I guess Ardour would make you happy. It runs native on OSX now.
I have great results with it.
Find it here:

one can never have to many microphones
