Total Microphone Survey 2009

Post by @?,*???&? » Sun Mar 08, 2009 8:23 pm

Okay, I've just worked a few days putting this together.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=y ... doGw_3d_3d

This could be interesting when its done. All of us have perceptions of these mics. Using a set of a few adjectives, this should set us up to find a good average of the characteristics of these mics.

Please react only to the mics you've had first-hand experience using in the studio. If you feel you have a 'vague' memory of the mic, try to refrain from marking it. Someone else will respond. This can come together through 'collective' response.

Also, if there are some models you'd like in this list, please let me know and I will get them in there. It's around 550 mics at this point.

Great idea, submitting some answers now.

Didn't see AKG 414 TLII on the list BTW..

&e

ps, Earthworks SR77, EV 667a,

pps, got a ways in and gave up, should really have an index, a few key mics missing, would be much improved experience if you had a photo of each mic or something. Also, I your parameters are limited, how about "fidelity", "frequency response", "off-axis coloration", "colored", "natural", etc.. Its a great idea, keep going!!!

Okay, thanks. Those are in there now. Also, a few additions Karma brand mics and Naiant.

And yes, an index would be fabulous except the SurveyMonkey software does not allow for that.

Be patient. Visit this over several days and you'll get through it!

Also, as this is quite large, feel free to visit it daily. The software will allow you to pick up where you left off the previous day.

This will run for 6 months from yesterday March 8, 2009.

i did it, i dont have experience with a whole lot of microphones, so i could only fill out a few of them. I think the Blue Bluebird is missing, perhaps I missed it though. I'll probably get to use some more of the mics on the survey over the next couple months, so I'll bookmark it so I can add more info as time goes on.
Why not?

Excellent. Well spotted. Got it on there now.

As we all gather knowledge, these mics will leave an impression with us. We will grab them when we need to capture sounds. Sonic memory is all we have to rely on short of a large mic locker for more involved A/B comparisons.

Thanks for taking part.

You could include some Altec mics, M11, Birdcage, etc..

This survey is the only time I've been happy to have a limited number of mics!

Instead of "warm" I would use "colored". Warm can be understood as dark.

I tried to shy away from specialty mics to keep this shorter and its still huge.

Also, no stereo mics in this lot as those are typically the same as other models. Will try to get the key studio mics from Altec up. Thanks for the Mann Electronics suggestion. Look for that soon.

A few updates on the list, the Berliner line of mics are up, the Kel brand line-up is up and it appears Shure has changed the designation to their KSM27 to the SM27 so that is now listed under both names.

Did some of it.
Skipped a lot of the better known microphones, like an RE20... if you record stuff, you know what those sound like. I understand why they are on there, but I figured you would gather enough data on those anyway.
Some good natured suggestions:
The Sage Electronics Bova ball should be on there.
The GT Md1A should for sure be on there.
The Neumann U48 is the same microphone as the U47 but with fig 8 and cardioid instead of omni and cardioid. They sound as same/different as any of the U47's I have ever used. I own/operate 3 different U47's all the time and they sound different from each other. I understand the general idea, but the U48 is redundant, in my opinion. it could just say "U47, U48,"
If that were needed, you should have the CMV with the M8 or the perspex M9 as well, ya know? No need.
The blue bottle is the same deal, it depends on the capsule so much for its sound.
Thats a cool idea though , Jeff.

Totally great idea. I weighed in on the dozen or so that I know intimately.

This could be an outstanding resource for folks hoping to expand their collection.

When/how can we view the results?
