If you could only buy a couple of RTAS plugs.....

Post by Trick Fall » Sat Apr 04, 2009 10:59 am

I just upgraded my computer and had been holding off buying any plug ins, but now I am ready to get a couple. Right now the only things I have are the standard pro tools 8 plugs and the joe meek compressor and EQ. I am going to get the Massey tape delay and limiter. I'd like to get another EQ and Compressor. Would love to hear some recommendations as I have not had the oppurtunity to try a bunch.

Thanks

Waves SSL
McDSP Emerald Pack

Not cheap, but they sound great.

If you want so cool free plug in's check these out!

http://www.masseyplugins.com/index_v2.html?page=home
Click on Demos and you can download the Universal Binaries for PT7 & Higher (if you're running pt7 or 8)

The tape head plug-in is awesome for making fuzz bass or overdriving a clean guitar or vocal. Aslo sounds great to add a bit of "warmth" to when used more subtlely. Great eq and compressor too. If you really like them you can buy the full versions at decent prices too.

Someone just sent this my way:

Cool input meter with phase switching and trim. Works great to make sure you're not clipping the AD convetors since PT doesn't have markins on thier meters!

Now if I had the cash I'd buy the UAD plug-ins. But I'd have to buy a new computer too...as I'm running an iMac. no place to put the hardware! Someday I'll upgrade. Check out the promo they are running:

http://www.uaudio.com/promo/

Depending on what card you buy there are also some free downloads like the Pultec EQP-1A, 1176SE, and the RealVerb Pro. My friend has has the UAD-2 card and it runs perfect on his g-5.

EDIT: oh you already mentioned the massey pug-ins. duh.

I'd love to do the UAD stuff, but unfortunately I had to go with an iMac. I wish Apple made a tower that wasn't crazy expensive.

I'd recommend the McDSP Project Studio Bundle. These plugs are LE versions of the main plugins. They are somewhat feature limited compared to the full price versions. However, I find them to be incredibly useful and well worth the relatively small investment. You should be able to pick it up for a little under $200.

I like the Bomb Factory Pultec bundle a lot. You can occasionally find it on ebay pretty cheap. I have no idea about compatibility with PT8 though.

Definitely check out the Massey compressor. It's awesome; probably use it more than any other software compressor. The URS EQs are pretty decent. I'd imagine there'll be a laptop/mobile/imac compatible version of the UAD2 before too long.

The Massey stuff sounds very good and is cheap. I use those plugins a lot! I've used some Sonalksis plugins that sounded really good, can't remember their names...

Then they would be VST plugins converted with the VST to RTAS translator!

Wavearts Trackplug... eq/comp/limiter/gate... all very high quality, low cpu with a very clean interface. Native RTAS (as well as vst & au formats).

50% off if you are a student... normally $200.

Hasn't that been available for a long time? Still just ExpressCard. No firewire.

yeah...it won't work with an iMac :(

If you've got a laptop with an Express 34 slot...than thats pretty sweet.

Anyone have experience with this?

PT 7 only though....I'd wait til it's 8 compatible, unless you aren't going to upgrade.
