Rigid fiberglass prices way up?

Howdy all, I was just calling around getting some price quotes from local insulation suppliers on the price of 2" 2x4 3.0pcf panels and I was rather surprised by the prices I was getting. I only found two suppliers in the area that had what I needed, and one quoted me at $12.24 per panel, and the other at 1.40 per square foot ($11.20 per panel). When I was looking around at some old threads I was finding a lot of quotes at around $7-8 a panel, and that's also what a friend of mine paid a few years back. So has this stuff dramatically risen in price or am I looking in the wrong places? -Chris

Holy shit! Granted, I haven't bought insulation in about 3 years, but last time I checked it was $.26/sqft for 2" 6pcf rockwool with foil backing. What brand are you looking at? I've found OC overrated and overpriced when Roxul/rockwool will work as good or better.

The brands I was quoted on were Knauf and Johns Manville.

2" Roxul 60 are $10 ea from ATSAcoustics though shipping is a bit of a killer.

i don't remember exactly but i wanna say johns manville 814 was about 11-12 a sheet last time i bought it, sometime in 2007...

I just called a place here in Portland. They're selling 3" thick Roxul Mineral Wool for $0.58 per sq. ft. That seems like a good deal to me. I think I'm gonna go get some tomorrow. How does 3" of Mineral Wool compare audio absorbtion-wise to 2" rigid fiberglass? If you need more to do the same job it might be a wash.

Found this link on the John Sayers forum, and I'm now definitely gonna call tomorrow on the prices of the Roxul. If it's even twice as much here that's still a better deal than the rigid fiberglass and it seems to do an equivalent if not better job. I'll keep everyone informed.

Is there a downside to working with mineral wool though? I've read that it's not as rigid as the fiberglass and more difficult to work with. This could be a big deal because I was not planning on making frames for these so much as just wrapping them in fabric and screwing them to furring strips to attach to the wall. Would this still be feasible? -Chris

Get the stuff with foil backing. I made frames for mine but it would work without as long as you're not moving them too much. The specs speak for themselves...roxul is the way to go.

Rock wool is usually not rigid, but you can easily build some frames and its still cheap. also look at the recycled cotton batting which is much like rock wool but without the itch. I only can think of "insulcot" but I know there is another brand too.

Alright, so I called my building suppliers this morning and got some great news. I was able to find 2" 8.0pcf mineral wool for $.70sf & 4" 4.5pcf for $1.12sf. I'm now paying almost half of what I would have buying the rigid fiberglass. Thanks a ton e'rybody! -Chris

I know it's late to comment here but I ordered six 2x4 (foot) pieces of 2" 703 from ATS for about $68 last year but if I can find something similar for cheaper that's also local I'll go there. Name your source, Chris!
