Pre-amp construction...
Pre-amp construction...
There was an article in last months TapeOp with the schematics for making a basic JFET preamp. I lost my copy of TapeOp and was wondering if someone could scan the article or knows of any websites that has good schematics for pre-amps?It looks like theres a nice one in the archives but the .gif file is so small I can't read it
Any suggestions?

Re: Pre-amp construction...
what kind of preamp do you want?
tube or solid state?
discrete or IC based?
simple? complicated?
xformer-coupled or transformerless?
power supply values?

check the "tech talk" forum on recording.org. someone scanned the article in a while back. do a search for tapeop jfet and you'll find it.

how about something simple for the beginners? maybe something that can actually be worth using. are there any projects like this? i want to try to build something, but would like to have a finished product that i will actually use.puffpastry wrote:what kind of preamp do you want?

There's a ton of stuff like this out there because it's so simple to design. It's possible for you to put a simple opamp-based pre together that will give you better results than any pro-sumer level stuff you can buy, and probably even compete with the high-dollar stuff, too.how about something simple for the beginners? maybe something that can actually be worth using. are there any projects like this? i want to try to build something, but would like to have a finished product that i will actually use.
You can try ESP for a simple preamp circuit or two. This place is pretty old-school IMO, meaning they're stuck on older opamps like the TL072 and the NE5532. If you build an opamp based pre, don't use these old, grainy sounding things. Use something like the OPA2604 or the AD816. The AD816 in particular is really fast (and stable), and will give you something that sounds just as good as a discrete circuit.
here's another link with some circuits.
