Quick poll - how many of you are using an RE20 for kick drum?

If you do, can ya'll post some examples of good RE20 kick capture.

I'm trying to find a reason to revisit my 'original' reason for buying this mic.

They are good for a 70s vibe on BD.

It's been forever since I've used mine on BD, but I think mine is fucked up. It was cool with another mic on guitar a while ago...

How different is the RE20 from an MD421 on a kick? I would think they are similar and I get a punchy kick (post eq) from a 421.

I have tried the RE-20 on Kick many times, rarely does the client approve however. Even if I think it works great with there sound, I end up using a D112. Why? Because people only seem to react to a kick drum that knocks the wind out of your chest.

I have a old D12 (not 112) and some vintage 421's (gray).

I've been using the D12 - but now want to add some more point to my sound. Would anyone use BOTH or (one-or-the-other).

Check the kick out here (on my latest CD that came out in June). Tell me if the sound (of the kick) needs some help:

I dig Maybe Tomorrow, quite the Floyd vibe. The kick seems pretty appropriate to me. It doesn't need to call much attention to itself in a track like that, imo.

Actually, they sound quite different to me. A 421 is more pointed and defined than an RE-20 which, in my experience, tends to sound boxy and muffled on the kick. I am a fiend for a 421 on the kick because I love the balance of punch and attack that it so faithfully provides even with no eq. I have liked an RE-20 on bass cab more than kick. Bass or extra shrill vocals would be my first choice.

I just used an re20 on the kick when recording my band. I think it works really well when the drummer has a small kit. In this case it's a snare, and a modified 18" tom for a kick, plus hats and a ride. On larger kick drums I agree a bit with the boxy comment, but i don't think of it as a bad thing. It really makes it more subdued in the mix and blends in a bit more. If you want an "in your face" sound this doesn't usually cut it. Also when coupled with a farther spaced FOK ldc or ribbon, the sounds blend together very nicely.

Well, I love the drum sound of Harvest in a physical way that I cannot describe, specially the BD.
If an RE20 was even in the room when the BD was recorded then I must have one..

I have both a D12e and an RE20. The RE20 came first, and was very cool for kick, until I got the D12. The 20 gets little use now. Mainly on scratch vocals and very nasally singers.

The RE20 is a great mic. It's good for most things. Much like an SM7 you can use it for about everything but overheads.

It has a distinct kick sound that is not very macho. It is very good for a mellower sounding drum set. Sometimes it is so mellow (compared to d112 or Sennheiser) that it sounds all wrong until you get to hear it on a rough mix on your home stereo and realize what it was doing all along.

The kick drum is uncommonly large, and I play it mediocre.

He probably overloaded every condenser they tried, and had to use the re-20.
