I'm now SM57 free!

Post by drumsound » Wed Sep 02, 2009 5:29 pm

I shipped out my 57 to madtho in a trade for a Heathkit signal tracer turned guitar amp. I soooooooo get the better end of the deal, and I haven't even heard the amp yet.

I still have the broken one to remind me...

Congratulations, Tony! I, personally, have been SM57-free all of my life. I know it's a difficult world out there with peer pressure and the temptation to find a quick and easy fix, but you'll be glad you got on the wagon from this point on. Best of luck to you!

Tony, you need help. Let me send you a 57 to help you properly record. From one friend to another.

No way! NADY? you are kidding right? audix??? hahahaha - and then you're gonna run it through your behringer tooob preamps? Neumann km84? everybody knows that mics not half as good as the KM184! (atleast for lead vocals). who would ever use that on a snare drum? that's INSANE.

C'mon guys - everyone knows that to make radio-ready, state-of-the-art, industry-standard recordings - you have to use a 57 on the snare.
nothing else handles those sweet frequencies as gracefully.

(and since i am feeling generous i'll tell you a secret industry professionals don't want you to know: you can use ANOTHER 57 UNDER the snare. No - seriously - you gotta try before you knock it. it will BLOW YOUR MIND. BUT - now please hear me - the key is - you have to FLIP the phase of the bottom mic. but hey - you didn't hear this from me!!!)

Is there a m201, or a revox or whatever in there, or do you have a vegetarian alternative on your snare?

Was this a 12 step kind of deal, or did you just go cold turkey?

Any idea what they did to the tracer to make it an amp? I've got mine working, as an amp, but I'd like to mod it more.

Someone should turn a 57 into a barcode dispenser.

Though I rarely reach for the 57 these days, I have to sing its praises after the last two nights of using it on snare top, with an AT4050 on snare bottom, and a pair of OktavaMod MK-012s in a spaced pair above the kit. The best snare sound I have EVER achieved, and the best overall drum sound I've ever been a part of recording. Umm... 57 and AT4050 tracked through Sytek 1-2, MK-012s through BA 312s.

But we used Coles and and SM7b on guitar cabs.

I know drumsound's a big fan of the atm23 on snare drums, and the sounds he gets can't be argued with.
