my new solo record: folk/pop on cassette 8-track
I recently made a record by myself at home, as an excuse to experiment with my Tascam 488 cassette 8-track. It's called The Things You Carry. Wasn't really intending on releasing it, but I loved how it turned out, so I put it up as a free download on my site: AustinStahl.net (you can download the whole thing, or stream a few tracks to sample first)
I had a lot of fun making it -- it was made entirely on the 488, so there was a lot of planning ahead, committing to sounds, "performing" the mixes because they were un-recallable, etc... All of which I loved!
Most things were compressed a bit on the way in (Pro VLA) because compression options at mixdown were severely limited. All reverbs were from the Alesis Wedge, with the occasional stompbox delay. Mics were most often 421 or 4050, with a few others here and there.
I'd love to hear some feedback!

Re: Sounds Good
Thanks, guys! Yes, totally on the 8-track. (The computer was used only as a stereo "mixdown deck" -- and there were a couple spots where I ended up splicing parts of two different mixes together, in Pro Tools.)fishbait wrote:Wow just listened quickly to 3 songs. FBH, I hope you took the plunge and downloaded the whole thing.
Re: Sounds Good
I wanted to wait until I was home before I did that, but I intend to. Thanks for sharing.austin wrote:FBH, I hope you took the plunge and downloaded the whole thing.

BEAUTIFUL. BEAUTIFUL.
I wish you whatever it takes to keep making music like this.
Great songwriting, excellent selection of instruments and sounds, excellent mixing.
You're making me love tape hiss again, Austin!
geek-tech question: What kind of mics didja use?

It differed from song to song, but the MD-421 saw a whole lot of use, and an AT4050 is on a lot of stuff. Some of the lead vocals were probably a Groove Tubes mic that I was borrowing for a while. And a couple of cheapo ribbons made appearances here and there.douglas baldwin wrote:geek-tech question: What kind of mics didja use?
