My very first attempt at recording my full band
I'm semi-new to recording, and I've had some experience recording myself and helping others out in a studio, but I wanted to know what you guys thought of my first attempt at a full-band recording with my own gear entirely. My band is deciding if I have the abilities to create a 5 song demo CD (we're a new band) to hand out at shows and have as a free download, or to pay for studio time.
It's also my first time at tracking/mixing DI bass and a drum kit. Oh yeah and I know my band sounds ridiculous Also the guitar has not been recorded yet, though for this particular track it isn't that necessary.

Thanks!

The trickiest part was the drums. I had only three microphones to work with, since my guitarist didn't come over that day (which is why there's no guitar) and he had the SM57 collection I was going to leech for the snare, toms, and kick. So I just used an MXL 990 and 991 for overheads, and some cheap 60s electro-harmonix (Hi-Z) dynamic inside the kick drum on a pillow. The kick obviously needed a lot of work but I was able to manage. I checked the TOMB for drum techniques and I tried pointing the overheads at the snare, at an equal distance, which sounded the best. In fact, I almost prefer fewer microphones on the drumkit, since it sounds far more natural and makes a drummer actually sound like a drummer!Trick Fall wrote:+1...I'm hoping to do the same soon and I hope it comes out this good. Post an update when you record the guitar. I'd like to hear it.

The interface is a Mackie 1202 Onyx with Firewire, recorded with Logic, and I used the built-in preamps. Vocals were recorded with the MXL 990, and my Squier bass was DIed and I used the built-in Logic bass amp modeler. Drums were done with an MXL 990, 991, and a 60's EH (no model number on it) mic. The synth was also using Logic's built-in softsynth. I know I gotta upgrade but all my money goes to UC tuitionGrahambo! wrote:what gear were you using? (e.g. software, preamps, interface, etc.)

Looks like the download expired. I uploaded it to a few more (I don't know what the best place is to upload...any suggestions for MP3s in particular?)mcdisease wrote:can't download files. do i need an account. don't want an account.

So I've got new tracks up on myspace.com/bigbluebus09
The only thing is that the song "Computers Don't Cry" is abysmal as I need to learn to use Logic's vocoder properly. I can't seem to record with it directly, and the mix is terrible, and the guitarist hasn't played on it so I just shoved a guitar track in there on my own.
