Holy crap! I love tape!!! 15ips RULES!
I just completed my first sessions using the 2" machine (16-track). The first one, we used 456 at 30 ips and I really loved the way it sounded.
The next session, I decided to try 15ips. HOLY SHIT!! With the same drums, same mics and different player (admittedly, who hits harder), I got some serious rock drum sounds. Smooth low-end and lots of it. Man, it's great. I didn't even bother re-aligning and re-biasing for 15ips (I aligned and biased for 30ips). I can't imagine what it'll sound like when I properly set up for 15ips. If it gets any better, I'll poop my pants.
It's official, I love tape. The smell, the look, the texture, the sound. It's all good. I'd bring it to bed if I didn't think my fiancee would kick me out and make me sleep on the couch.

I'm getting back into tape as soon as I get my patch bay installed tomorrow. Have a 16 track Fostex E-16. Have been using a Mackie MDR-24, but want the option of going back to the tape sound. Digital is handy for sure, but tape is where it's at.

Re: Holy crap! I love tape!!! 15ips RULES!
if set up correctly:
30 ips= What you heard when going to tape through your monitors, comes back sounding like what you heard.
15ips= A little less fidelity coming back at you off the machine.
Atlest that was how it was explained to me. Can I tell the difference, I don't know, I record in my basement. What the hell do I know

Re: Holy crap! I love tape!!! 15ips RULES!
Today I heard 15 ips 2" playback for the first time. Hell yeah. We were just listening to the day's takes, not trying to mix or anything. The full dynamic range was there and untampered with. Such a deep, deep soundfield. Sweet.
It's a pity that sound gets squashed many times over before it's heard outside the studio.

I love 16/2 at 15 IPS. There is such an amazing bump in the low end at 15.
I really like printing entire mixes (from 30 ips on the studer A827) to otari MTR15 1/4" @ 15 ips with HX pro. Awesome stuff. You can get SOOOOO bright, and it still just stays listenable.
Printing at 15, sometimes I will let the tape rolland tweak the mix via the repro heads to make up for the squishy high end. Things like OH and guitar get a little upper end bump. Man you really hear THAT when you kick back over to input...

Re: Holy crap! I love tape!!! 15ips RULES!
I loooooove what tape does to the kick and bass! So although I use a digital recorder, I've always tried to track the drums and bass to tape before dumping transferring it over to my digital recorder.

I think it's even better with dolby SR and IEC EQ vs. NAB EQ

Just NOTE that 1/4 two-track machines have that same fatness as 2" 16 track (do the math). So, even in a ProTools world, you can print to a (cheap) 1/4 machine and get that sound. I do not have ProTools, won't use it. I find tape has lots of magic effects sonically and psychologically. Just glad you feel it too.
I have another friend who played his old '80's Fostex tapes; he says they are better sounding than his expensive modern studio with all the conatge pre's but a PTools rig. So now he's looking for a tape machine too. A good time to buy....
