Black Sabbath In The Studio Info??
Anyone know where to find info, pictures, video of (Ozzy) Sabbath in the studio? Recording techniques, etc?

FWIW, I recall reading in some mag back in the 80's that Sabbath Bloody Sabbath had numerous, I mean in the 10's, 20's or mebbe more, guitar overdubs ...
I remember this because as young players we were amazed at that and listened to the vinyl over and over trying to pick out different parts where pick-ups changed, etc.
I note that I disliked Sabbath, also, until after I got married in the 90's to a younger woman who was a big Ozzy fan; it was then I began to really understand Paranoid ...

On kind of a side note, I am astonished at how lucky Ozzy is, or at least how easily things fall into his lap.
- 1st BS album 'accidently' becomes benchmark of entire global metal genre
- Last second song Paranoid becomes classic rock staple
- After getting kicked out of BS and is pretty much in the gutter, marries a beautiful rich girl who guides him into one of the most successful careers in the 80's
- Let's a camera crew film him swear and act braindead and spends another whole decade as a mainstream icon.
I'm pretty sure Ozzy Osbourne will be the one to destroy that coming asteroid by doing something as banal as getting out of bed and yawning.

There are a few photos floating around of the guys in the studio in which I imagine is the Paranoid or Master of Reality sessions. For the first three albums, they were barely in the studio long enough to develop any real 'techniques'. They were more or less ushered in, recorded their songs and back out on the road.
Vol 4. was probably the first time they started trying to work within the studio but most of the stories I have heard are simply just good time stories, nothing regarding technique or anything.
I do like how you can hear Bill Ward's drum throne squeak in the beginning of 'Lord of This World'.

No, you aren't. It's pretty obvious to me that they were blazing a new trail and it took a while to figure out how to make capture it. To a certain extent, I think the people who followed sound better doing BS-type stuff than BS still do today.losthighway wrote:Am I the only one who likes Sabbath but thinks their recordings sound kinda bad?

The reason these recordings sound SO cool are:SoftSupply wrote:Wow. An oyster black Ringo kit and a couple KM54's, with the 18" crash almost touching the wall?
I guess it's like the guitars on the first Zep album being done with Tele and a tiny Supro amp -- looks can be decieving. So can sounds.
Properly tuned drums...
Great (human) player...
NOT smothered in "production"...
And let's not forget the most important thing: Great music being recorded
