Some info from the government. Dont shoot the messenger.
Here is some info from the FCC. Enjoy.
Wireless microphones currently operate in a variety of different
frequency bands, including many frequencies outside of the 700 MHz
band. Only those wireless microphones using the 700 MHz band must
cease operating. Some wireless microphones that operate in the 700
MHz band can be successfully retuned to operate in frequencies other
than 700 MHz. If the wireless microphone operates only in the 700 MHz
frequency band, it will need to be replaced.
Links to Helpful Information
We are providing you with many useful links to information available
on the FCC?s website. We ask that you forward this email to all of
your member groups.
This email includes a link to the FCC?s website dedicated exclusively
to providing consumers with important information on 700 MHz wireless
microphones. That link can be found at
http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/wirelessmicrophones/.
We also provide links to other consumer information including
?Frequently Asked Questions? (FAQs), the ?Consumer Fact Sheet,? the
?Consumer Advisory,? and the FCC?s wireless microphones press release,
that can be found at the following web link:
http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/wirelessmicrophones/Pubs.html
A table can be found at
http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/wirelessmicropho ... urers.html that may
be useful in determining whether the wireless microphones your groups
use operate within the 700 MHz band and will need to be replaced or
retuned. We recommend contacting your wireless microphone?s
manufacturer to answer any technical questions you may have. Links to
many manufacturers can be found on this same FCC website as well.
A link to the FCC decision itself can be reviewed at

Thanks Joel. I was just checking into this the other day. Thankfully I don't have to replace my wireless mics...yet. Eventually the Feds will sell even more frequencies to the phone companies but for now I'm OK.

I can see why people might be pissed about this, but there is a silver lining. I used to do live sound for Britney Spears and she is religious about only using an AKG WMS 950. She is very superstitious about it (I saw three people kicked off tour regarding an incident when one wasn't immediately available and only one of them had anything to do with it). And, guess what? It's on the list. I am not kidding - this will probably put her off touring for a year.

PS - Actually, none of that is true but it would be cool if it was, right?

If it were true, would it even make a difference? Just hand her the same mic and leave the receiver at home; it's not like you ever unmuted it before anyway.Justin Foley wrote:I can see why people might be pissed about this, but there is a silver lining. The cutoff, as announced by the FCC, is June 12, 2010.ott0bot wrote:Good info....didn't it take effect last June?
Just wondering because I heard about this in class last year, and as a result the school was going to replace it's entire wireless system. Needless to say, my live sound teacher, who was the a/v guy on campus, was pretty peeved.

I think reality is that most people in most places will continue to use them, but with risk of signal disruption. When a competing signal moves into your area, your shit will just break, and it would be very unlikely that you would interfere with anyone's official signal, given the small output power of wireless mics. Very doubtful that anyone would get in trouble in most places. Don't quote me if you kill your local ambulance service! Joel in NYC; probably not gonna work.

Consider this a guideline rather than a law. Laws require enforcement, enforcement requires officers, officers require funds. As usual, the feds pass more toothless laws without a funded enforcement provision.
They will get around to enforcing that as soon as the round up all the illegal aliens, close Guantanamo Bay, pull out of Iraq, jail all those robo home phone call violators (I sign up to the "do not call" list every year) prosecute all those corrupt congressmen under investigation, pass health care reform, fix the roads and dams, educate your kids, etc, etc, etc.
In other words, never.
