Tribute to Portastudio Beginnings: Post 4-Track Recordings!

This is one of the last 4-track songs I did. I'd already worn out a Porta 05 and this was its replacement the 424ii. At this point, I'd read a little alt.music.4-track and rec.audio.pro but was too chicken to buy any gear.

Everything went through an Audio Technica PR80 (which was a cheap SM58 clone) and instruments though a Peavey Classic 20. I didn't use the built-in DBX noise reduction so to get compression (I didn't know that was what it was) I'd record with DBX but turn it off for the main mix. I only used this effect on vocals. It was very hissy and I'd roll off a lot of high EQ.

Have been recording to my DAW (Adobe Audition) for years, usually using a variety of outboard effects and compressors, and through a board, but always ultimately "printing" to the harddrive, and then mixed in multi-track fashion ITB.

Lately, I've been having HUGE fun recording directly to my Tascam 234 or 238 and then mixing in real-time with effects through my board down to a 2 track which then is yes, recorded to Audition as a stereo master, with only subtle limiting happening ITB, nothing else. At least everything starts life hitting tape, and I believe that quality comes through.....love the sound of tape, and love the mechanics of working this way. Knobs.....faders.....goooooood.

Here are some occasionally silly, yet earnest examples of recording to the Tascam 238 and 234. Everything's usually first take, especially vocals...just off the cuff and it shows. Emphasis is on the mixing process for me, and having fun also.

recorded on a tascam 144. Just picked up a 246 for 25 bucks, replaced the belts, needs a new pinch roller...but otherwise working great! love 4-track.

Some sludgy thash metal shit I recorded probably 5 years ago on a 424 mkII. Guitar, bass and drums live and loud in one room. Bounced and overdubbed vox with a 58. This version is absolutely smashed. I might have done that with Cubase or somethin back then.
