One of the coolest studio signs ever...
Hey all,
Here I have a 12 foot tall (or so) RCA ribbon mic style studio sign I'm selling from my old place. I designed it and had hit made for $8,000.00. I'm ready to lose my butt on this. The phone number etc. on it can be made to read yours. Local pick-up in Chicago only. Check out this pic...you won't believe this thing...looks like a Las Vegas sign!

Trades for gear (a la EQs, comps, tube pres) very welcome! Someone please take this off my hands...I'm open to just about any offers. Make this the new sign for your studio or convert it into some type of swank bar top. Best...JD!

Yes...I did. And I waited months to get it. It would have cost me even more if I didn't have an in with the builder too. Big custom made signs like this one don't come cheap unfortunately. When you figure that they needed to scratch build a 12 foot tall x 4.5 foot wide steel sign that lights up then install it, $8k is really not that bad. I've owned mics that cost near as much and they're only what...a 1 foot piece of steel? It's always surprised me as to how much people will pay for gear then not advertise their business. I was able to design this sign myself because I worked in the sign business for years prior. Our slogan was "A business with no sign is a sign of no business." Best...JD!

I have actually been offered in the past to sell it to someone who would use it to advertise another type of business. By removing the vinyl lettering the sign could easily be made to read whatever. It's oval shape needn't be associated with a mic...it kinda' looks like a big Tylenol as well...lol! Anyways, I didn't want to sell it to a bar...I wanted very badly to see it go to another audio related business. These days...I could care less who buys it to be honest. I used to share your sentiment that it would attract seedy attention...then I pulled the trigger and got the sign. It did get me a lot of attention...but it was god for business I found. Often times, studios seem like after thoughts...usually nestled away in some dark, dank warhouse district. Anyways, I never had a theft or crime problem because of it. I assume that if you don't want to deal with the seediest of seedies at times that you wouldn't be in the music biz. Besides, car dealerships and jewelry stores house much more valuable items than our studios do and they advertise with no issues. Best...JD!

I'd contact local music stores & radio stations... Columbia College... That sort of thing.

Thanks John for the heads up! I did try a few local music shops but got frustrated that no one wanted it...lol! I guess it's one of those things that you know has value to someone out there...it's just hard finding the right person. I've pretty much lost all hope of moving it by now...which is ashame. Storing it is expensive, but I just hate to junk it...ya' know? Oh well...thanks anyways. Best...JD!
