Anyone know what this kind of jack is called?

It's from an Olson crystal mic. Anyone know where I can get an adapter, or should I cut it off and replace it?

Also, the mic has a switch on the back S OFF P. Wha dat?

i believe that is the standard old-fashioned hi-z mic connection, found on myriad old mics. the good news is that shure's hi-z to lo-z mic impedance matching transformer actually mates to those. they cost about $20, and you end up with a properly impedance matched, BALANCED mic signal, on an xlr connection to boot. i believe the model number is like a95-u or something like that. there's almost definitely a 95 in it. they're pretty readily available. i have one on my turner crystal mic, and everything is fresh.

I have heard them called "hotpoint" connectors, and also called "those terrible crappy things that should be replaced immediately." I have an adapter that i got from a harmonica player that it "hotpoint" to 1/4". I guess you can find those. That is what i use when i really need that "found it at the landfill" sound.

yeah, those can be some pretty crappy connectors, but they do seem to be a common design for the older Hi-Z mics. One of the problems you may run into with cutting it off is what do you replace it with that will screw onto the base of the mic so that blob of solder makes proper contact with the mating bit on the mic body? I think I have 2 or 3 different thread types on my Hi-Z mics; I know the old Sony Lavalier cable won't fit on the EV's. I wound up clearing all the old rotten cable out of the connectors and installing new, trying hard to fashion a similar blob for the contact point. I made short pig tails with a standard TS female connector on the output end of the cable so I can just use a regular guitar cable to plug 'em in. I only use the old fellas plugged into guitar amps for "dirty" sounding vox or harp work, so have never cared about having a balanced output...

Amphenol MC1M. Switchcraft made it to, I think they still do. You might find it a Radio Shack.

I think you should go the discs of tron route. I didn't even know that thing existed! All my older mics have those MC3 or MC4 screw on connectors. You can wire them for unbal-hi-z or bal-lo-z operation.

hey- i'm at work and i was perusing the av-geek catalogs. the thing you want is a shure A95U. available at any AV geek supply place. the catalog in my lap is from photomart cinevideo in orlando, fl. 800-443-2901. the things are pretty ubiquitous, though. anyone that stocks shure stuff should have it. peace out.
