GT 66 into focusrite or board pre (modded soundcraft), no EQ no nuttin, post Comp with dbx 163x if any. Haven't found anything it sounds bad on.
Other than that a modded V67G or one of my supermodded Oktava 319's which sound awesome but are soild state, when I need that sound. V67G is a bit more high end emphasis, not much, just a little.
Harumph!

What is this "low noise mod" for the Aphex 107 you speak of?

Omni 012 or 4033 > EH 12AY7 > 1814FW (w/BLA converters)

4033 > ZED14 > 1814FW more and more lately

Pro VLA when compression is desired.

Lots of love for the ZED14 pre's

most recently it is either a MXL V69 with NOS tube (for dark/warm) or Blue Dragonfly (present, upfront, airy) --> Hamptone JFet --> LA-4

Super flexible

Soundfield MkV into SSL channel with light desk comp to AD16x

or

Brauner VMA into Cranesong Phoenix (although i prefer API 512c) into SSL channel to AD16x...

Peace :D

I tracked some pretty good sounding vocals lately with:
Lomo M1/mc012 > HHb Radius 50 w/ NOS telefunken tube (input cranked pretty strongly) > Aardvark converters. No compression, and just a touch of High-pass eq.

Usually a Lomo 19A19.
Sometimes a Shure SM7
Rarely a Coles 4038
Really rarely an EV666

Into a

Usually a Telefunken V72
Sometimes a Neve 1272
Rarely a Quad Eight

Into a

Almost always an ELOP.

On rare occasion the mic goes straight into a GE UniLevel. It's got so much gain it needs no pre. It's got a FAT grind to it so sometimes it WORKS!! But usually it's too much.

The convertor is an Apogee Rosetta set to 88.2 into Nuendo.
Check out my website for cool songs recorded and played by me with Steve Goulding of the Mekons on drums. Drums were recorded by our own Joel H at Studio G.

Most often a Wunder CM7 into a Voxbox...although I do have one client who insists on using the same mic with a Wunder PEQ1 and a Vari-Mu. Sounds great on his voice.

i hope to get an R84 some day. Heard it in a studio i was interning in....and I've been saving ever since.
Just did a bunch of R84-> old Ampex pre vocals. Worked out really well. Also had a great time with the Bock 195 into a Daking Mic Pre One. Those have been the home studio thingies lately. At work, it's been U87->GML 2020.

The mic varies At4050, TLM 103, Blueberry, Fathead II, Beyer M160,
Pres: Usually a modded Yamaha PM1K or Dan Alexander 1272 unless I'm using the Fathead then it might be a Scully 280. Then on into an ART Pro VLA or TF Pro P38 but as always whatever seems or sounds appropriate.

Last year I used an Audix i5 through a Universal Audio 6176 and it was just perfect but a lot of it was the singer and the whole old school punk vibe they were looking for.
Of course I've had it in the ear before.....

AT4047 or SM7 or MD1 or C4000B -> Great River Mp-500nv -> Retro Sta Level.

Sometime I like the API 512c, but more often I turn to the Great River.
