I am a big fan of closed back cabinets for live and recording.
I like the low end and focus and how they couple with the floor.
I use the Jensen P12R Alnico speakers in a bunch of my old Bassman 2 x 12" cabinets.
I did want to try something different. Dr Z had been telling me for ages that his amps liked Celestions better. 8 years into using the Dr Z's I went out and got one of his 2 x 12" open back "stangray" cabinets. I got it loaded with 1 15 watt Celestion Alnico Blue and 1 Celestion G12H.
I lit up the '65 2 x 12 Bassman cabinet that I've been very with for quite some time first. Then the Dr Z 2 x 12 Open Back cabinet.
In a word, wow.
Lot of sparkle without being scratchy and at least 90% of the bass that the closed back cab has. I checked it out with a couple Dr Z heads and a '62 blonde Bassman. Sounded great with all of them. I could get the sound that I got from the closed back cab plus some extra sparkle and air.
And close miked the 2 Celestions do have different tones.
Really glad I got this cabinet. Took me too long.

Awesome score! I love mine, especially in stereo. You have to let me know what you think about it.losthighway wrote:Sound Workshop 242A Spring Reverb. I've been wanting one for a year and this is the first I've come across. Woo hoo.
