MCI JH110c, should tape lifters make tape clear erase head?

The manual for my JH110c 2 track tape deck says that the tape lifters should be adjusted so that the tape clears the erase head.

However, it doesn't even look like this is possible on my machine because the tape lifters don't extend out far enough (not even close at max setting) but all other heads are cleared. Does that sound right for this machine?

Talked to Steve Sadler and he confirmed the erase head isn't cleared on the C models.
