live show stereo mic set up

Hi,
I am recording a live bluegrass show.
I am gonna take a mix of the show from the board but also want to record a stereo room set
I plan on recording to my pro tools mbox pro and mac, using the pre's and phantom from the mbox
What mics should i get.
I was looking at shure sm81's, rode nt5's and akg 451 B
Any other suggestions for mics and actual mic placement:xy, spaced pair?

Of those 3 mics, I only have experience with the SM81's and I'd recommend them.

As far as mic configuration goes, I've done a lot of quick'n'dirty stuff for radio stations (actually doing one today, right now) that were a stereo board feed and stereo room mics. After trying a bunch of different configurations for the stereo room mics, I've discovered that I love ORTF in for this purpose; it actually does kinda sound like you're "in the room", whereas I was never satisfied with a spaced pair or x/y no matter where I put them.

+1 for ORTF. I use Beyer MC930's usually. No experience with any of the mics you list.

i used an nt5 and nt1a through two SCA-C84 pre's for the banjo.

+1 on the ORTF placement.

ADK's TL mics work beautifully for recording live shows. They are also extremely useful elsewhere as well. 4 patterns.

yeah ORTF, seriously make sure that your room mics are mono compat. I also like MS for this, though MS room mics can be tricky in some spaces. They seem to do better for the mono compatibility then most other stereo room setups save xy.

ORTF with both TL's set on cardioid is what I do for live shows.

Maybe I'm taking the wrong approach but out of that selection of mics I'd pick the AKG C 451. I'd place them in X/Y configuration a third from the front of the hall facing the back. Compensate for delay / polarity as needed.

what about m/s? I agree that the easiest thing to do would be to get a matched pair and hard pan them to avoid phasing issues. ORTF would be the best if your target is headphones, x/y might be just as good for speakers.
