cloning drives

Post by megajoe » Thu Feb 24, 2011 9:50 am

I have a '05 Powerbook ready for a new drive. I have a lot of stuff on it, and I want to clone it to make life easier.

Would this work?

1)Use carbon copy cloner to clone the internal onto an external drive
2)hook the external up to my newer mac
3)install the new drive in my laptop
4)hook up the laptop as a target drive to the newer mac
5)clone the external drive to the new internal one

just do the system migration.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413

or put the old laptop in target mode on startup and it will treat it like a firewire drive.

super simple stuff.

I didn't explain myself clearly. I have two separate systems. I'm not interested in migrating anything. I have a newer desktop and an older laptop. I'm replacing the HD in the laptop 'cause it's approaching 6 years old. I want to clone the old drive that's already in there so all I have to do is swap drives.

I don't have a 2.5" PATA to Firewire/USB interface, so I was wondering the steps I had listed would work. I should probably just hold off and order an enclosure huh...

yes this will work..
I did it last week to my macbook.. ran out of space..
i cloned the drive (upgraded to a bigger faster drive) with a usb to sata/ide adapter cable ($19 at fryes)
made extra partitions beforehand.. swapped it out.. good to go..
all my audio apps, plug ins, etc work like it never happened..
hope that helps..

Carbon Copy Cloner is the way to go...will make an EXACT copy of the drive for later.
