Transients and XY OH??

Post by Derrick » Tue Dec 23, 2003 1:46 pm

Sigh... guys, can you help a self taught gent understand these two terms?
What are:

*xy pattern overhead miking

*transients

Is there a good place to go to look up terms such as these? Thanks!

For stereo patterns (of which XY is one), try this:
http://www.dpamicrophones.com/eng_pub/index.html
DPA Microphones

"Transients" is a fancy name for "bums" or "Phish fans".
Just kidding (sorta). Try here:

Rane Professional Audio Reference Home

Google is your friend, too.

You've noticed that, too--a lot of new users popping up here with questions that could be answered in ten seconds with a Google search?

Thanks, the XY is along the lines of what I was thinking. As for Transients, this seems more complex. Would transients refer to, say, a kick drum signal or the "P" in p-words as someone is singing or speaking into a mike with no windscreen? Anotherwords, sound sorces that are quick but powerfull?

PS- Google wasn't my friend for this!

i'm not very technical... but i think of transients as the initial attack of a sound. like the smack of a drum.

they also beg for change by the 7-11. hate the bastards.

In audio, "transient" refers to any signal of short duration. It's usually, although not always, used in reference to a short, high-amplitude signal.

I think most people think of transients as the sharp origin of the attack portion of a sound..

on a wave it looks like this and you can see how different kinds of mics respond to transients

someplace at homerecording.com

pretty neat to see how those kind of mics respond to transients..

but keep in mind everything in an audio chain is going to effect the transients as well..tape dulls them out too..
