Transformer wiring question

Post by paulrichards7 » Wed Mar 02, 2011 4:10 pm

Hi, I got hold of a couple of old transformers for my color box
I am looking at wiring diagram(see below)
http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/oo34 ... Triads.jpg
Now if I wire these as 600:600 line transformers
1. They will be unbalanced, right?
2. Not quite sure what the center tap does?
Any help would be great
Thanks
Paul

wire them for the 600 ohm - which means you will tie the pair together and cover with some shrink tube.

Then hook pins 2 & 3 (tip and ring) of your jacks (XLR or TRS) to the transformer input and output pairs and you will have a balanced input and output. pay attention to the polarity so you don't inadvertently reverse phase. tie the grounds (pin 1 or sleeve) of your jacks and maybe connect the chassis of your transformer in there if needed. done.

Each side has two 300-ohm windings. So think like you're figuring speaker wiring... put them in series for higher impedance, parallel for lower impedance.

There are uses for a center tap, but not really in your application.

I'd be interested to know how they sound when you get it done. I have a couple of Triad A67-j transformers that I am going to use a s 600:600 in a dual Spectra Sonics 110 preamp rack that I am building. It's got me interested in old Triad transformers in general.
