Analog man Sunface is my choice.

Great fuzz.

Another great one is zvex fuzz factory.
Um excuse me, these headphones aren't working...

in the 15 yrs i have been playing, i've come to two conclusions about gain pedals:

boosts and fuzzes are the only things worth purchasing, IMO. distortion from a pedal is fine for recording but always lacks definition live.

if you're going for a clean boost/TS vibe, go with a ZVex SHO or a Psionic Audio Triad. maybe a Keeley (never heard, but hear good things)? gain down, volume dimed. make your amp work harder and distort earlier; slam that front-end.

fuzzes are a totally unnatural but make things interesting. some personal favourites are: StressFX custom Ram's Head Muff w/Swollen Pickle tone stack, Kay Fuzz, FoxxTone Fuzz Wah (original), DOD Buzz Box, Prescription Experience, DB Design Lemon Fuzz, Bee Baa, etc.

Not a fuzz but I love my Tech 21 Tri-AC for distortion tones. A great variety and with three footswitches and nearly instant programming it is great for live work.

The Boss Metal Zone is an interesting pedal if you are looking for nasty, unrefined tones. The sweepable midrange makes is possible to sound like shit at any frequency you choose.

Mesa Boogie V Twin is a great sounding pedal for some things. I don't like it cranked too high.

The one I miss from long ago is the Bazz Box. Foul, evil thingie. I gutted mine and installed it in a Lyle 335 copy. Gave me a sort of Neil Young in Buffalo Springfield tone.

Then it died and I tossed it.

I prefer 'the dorito' but 'the landing strip' is nice too.

Metal Zone never has enough definition live, which can be a good thing if you are looking for that Whipping Boy (Ireland) sheeny Boss MT-2 > AC30 thing.

HM-2 is pretty sheeny, too; Belinda Butcher of MBV uses one ...
