I would like to see more discussion of mixing techniques too, and there is a clear difference between that and recording techniques, which seems to focus more on tracking, in all its incarnations. No need to be so aggressive.dwlb wrote:Well, the board has eleven categories already. If we want to add categories for mixing, or miking, or effects, or compression, or tracking vs. overdubbing...you could subdivide this into infinity. But there is, quite simply, no point to doing that.
+1 on a mixing techniques category
Cheers!

Or, instead of arguing semantics, we could actually discuss mixing.

Well, essentially the way I look at it: you've got a bunch of knobs and faders and controllers. They each do something. So what you're after is the combination of settings that make the music sound really good. There's absolutely no way to predict, beforehand, what this arrangement will look like, and it will be completely different, song to song.
So the process to apply is one of incremental experimentation, paying careful attention to the results you're getting and the improvements in clarity and force and groovability and then realizing when you're at the peak of perfection-- and then stop and print it.
