Beyer M160 on Snare?

Post by Mane1234 » Sun May 01, 2011 5:14 am

Anyone ever use this on a snare? I know it can handle the SPL but I was just wondering if anyone ever tried it? I don't want to do anything to hurt it cause it's my favorite ribbon mic. I'd be running through a Sytek most likely. Thanks
Of course I've had it in the ear before.....

I've tried it and haven't liked that way it sounds, but I know people who do. Apparently, Tony Visconti really liked them on snare, but would only use them on a "one take" kind of drummer for fear of doing some kind of damage to them.

i like it a lot. i only use it on quieter stuff. but i like it aimed at the shell from say 6" back. a very useful sound that you can turn up loud in the mix without feeling like the snare's right in front of your nose.

Thanks for the replies....It's anything but slow, quiet music in a one take situation...I'll go a different route.

I like m160 on snare.

I don't use it on drummers who may whack it with a stick!

It can be kinda cool! Works for a good retro vibe- kind of accentuates the pop and crack of the drum, and de-emphasizes the hollow ring and kettle-tone of the shell.

Here's a mic test page that has some clips of the m160 on snare compared against a Shure sm57, Sennheiser 421, AKG 414 and Royer 121 : http://bit.ly/kSFu4O Doesn't beat trying it yourself, but should help give a good sense.

For future instances when you find yourself asking questions like this: you have our express permission to try any mic you have access to on any sound source you can think of! (not that you need it). Just report back with your findings!

Thanks for posting that link. Wish I had some of those combos to try out. One of them that I do have is a pair of 012's and a Sytek which will get some consideration next time round. My original post about using the M160 on snare was mostly just to see if anyone had a reaction along the lines of "for the love of God man don't do it" sort of thing. I'd hate to wreck one of my favorite mics because of something stupid like believing I know what I'm doing.

never tried it on floor tom, but i've gotten nice results on rack tom. liked it as front of kit mic too. got a really nice sound the other day with just the m160 as overhead and a d112 on the kick. m160 was over by my right shoulder, aimed at the snare.

I agree with M160 on bottom snare with something else on top. It can be really nice there, and out of harm's (stick's) way.

Man, I?m so addicted to the sizzle of the snares on the bottom mic. I am always afraid of losing some of that going with a ribbon.

Does anyone find that to be an issue come mix time?

P.S. my standard mics for BS are: KSM 141 or Chameleon Labs TS-1

Thanks

It's just different. You know how M160 can work on acoustic sometimes, and sometimes you want something brighter? It's kind of like that.

The amount of 'sizzle' from the wires has more to do with the wires themselves and how the drum is set up (in my experience anyway). Sometimes the wires are actually too active and need a little taming.

not on bottom snare, no. I could see that working rather well.
