your favorite dynamic mic for toms?

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere; my search terms may have been too vague.

I know many like the Sennheiser 421 and its immediate family. 421 may be a little rich for my blood right now... are there any alternatives you like outside the condenser kingdom, or is the venerable oblong mic with the fancy clip the cream of the crop?

AKG d19 is one of the best floor tom mics I've ever used. Bayer M88s are also pretty great. Neither are a budget option though.
I also like ribbons but it can be a chore positioning them to avoid cymbal bleed.

Audix i5/d2/d4 are good. Sennheiser e906 (and I imagine the e609 also) too. Nothing wrong with a sm57 either.

Not a dynamic mic but I am now a firm believer in using the Oktava MK-012 on toms. Sounds really great. I have used 421s on both rack and floor toms, and an SM7b and D112 on floor tom and also loved the results. I usually use my Sytek BB channels or BA 312s (when available) for toms preamps. I'm sure that PM1000 channels would be awesome as well with all of these mics.

Man, I used my AKG D200E's through my new Altec 1566A pre's and it was the best tom sound I've ever got by a mile.
The D200E on kick was pretty amazing, as well.
It's a cool mic and they're not that expensive. Dual element with a crossover that splits the high and low frequencies.

The e604 clip-on mics are pretty good. Fairly cheap used. I still give an edge to my 421s, but they are fairly close and work better in tight space situations and are great for live sound. I also like e604 on snare in many situations.

Thanks as always for the great suggestions! I have one D1000E and one i5 at my disposal, so I may try each of those and hunt down another of the one that works the best for the set of toms I'll be working with next. I've got a set of Oktava MK012s I've been looking forward to trying on toms, too.

I'm also interested in the 604s. Vxboogie, Tim, how would you describe the sound you got with them that you liked?

I've been pleased with my trusty M179s, which were good at representing the full range of the drum, but didn't offer as much punch as a 421 with a little drive on it (re: transient response, diaphragm weight, etc).

I'm guessing bigger diaphragms with a less-dramatic presence bump are going to be the jam.

I've been really liking the heil pr28. Really great rejection of outside sounds. Nice and balanced. So far no complaints. I sold my 604's, and I even ditch the 421s a lot when I hear the difference in bleed.

I think they are very similar sounding mics on toms, especially on the rack toms. I might go be default to a 421(or e602)on floor tom if space isn't a problem(due to the ride).

I should probably track both mics on the same toms sometime and get a comparison. I don't have any drum sessions coming up soon.

I also like the versatility of the 421s for amps, vocals, etc.

dynamics- 421 or ATM-25.

but really like the oktava 012's which are condensers.
