But I don't think you can imagine just how stressful it is to restrain myself-- but back on topic--

It seems like everyone's tales of blistering audio levels to the ear yield a common theme-- a disorienting spell of ringing and great anxiety, but gradually these lessen and hearing returns to "normal."

Now, if we could expand the topic-- has anyone ever smelled something so powerful it ruined their nose?

I know someone with a ruined sense of smell, but I can't remember the reason why...

There's a well-written piece in the new Atlantic abouth this same subject by Jon Fine of Bitch Magnet.

Post-Ramones show was the most frightened I had ever been for my ears. After that, almost the first thing I ever did upon entering a club was to go the the men's room, grab some toilet paper, and stuff it in both of 'em.

Read somewhere that Michael Hutchence (r.i.p.) slipped on ice at some point in some Nordic country and the resulting concussion caused him to lose his sense of smell/taste permanently.

I have misplaced my expensive molded "musicians" ear plugs, and that makes me sad. This thread is encouraging me get tested again and get those plugs once again.

Last time I got checked it looked like this.

I am trying to figure out... are you quoting a song lyric that I just can't remember at the moment?

That was from the Dan's live bootleg, a song called "Dr. Cow and the Bad Sneaker Smell."

No, Joel, that's a real person I know. My wife just told me that it's the same as shredshrine's scenario; she hit the back of her head in a skiing accident, and lost smell and most taste...

What a drag, then-- head trauma jangles the nerves, somehow? Somewhere something gets disconnected?

Yeah, I'm not sure what's up with that, except mild brain trauma, or at least a pretty important budle of nerves back there somewhere, I guess...

Arc welding. But I s'pose injuries are going to have unpredictable results, probably never on the plus side.

So we were talking about overloading sensory perceptors that results in damage, and maybe we can classify the senses into those that will and those that won't. Blinding flashes of light, say-- could someone actually really be "blinded"?
