recording drums through a PA

Post by C_R_J » Mon Dec 19, 2011 1:55 am

i read somewhere on here on the net a while back about recording drums through a PA behind the drum kit (flaming lips?), and i just cant seem to find a good link or anything about it. i now have access to a pair of decent powered PA speakers where i record drums, and im just starting to really get into using room mics more when recording drums, so this sounds like something id be very interested. is it worth talking about? or does anyone have any good links for me? thanks for your time.

Sounds kinda like reamping without the wait. Could be cool.

Did it with Soul Asylum/GraveDancers Union at Power Station in 92. Regular close micing, over and close/far room. 2 PA cabs with subs, crossed over so mostly just sub blasting. Just sent kick, snare, toms to it and mic'd the room.
Put some room mics all the way up in that coffin cutout thing in the ceiling.
It helped that the kit (20" kick,12"tom,16" floor) were almost completely loose, with LOTS of tape and dampening.

As a drummer it can be fun and energizing to hear your drums helped out by a PA. Not sure if that applies to tracking with headphones on or not though.

I think maybe the mixerman diaries mention this too.

It is in there; illustrating the whole "live soundman vs. studio guy" dichotomy.

It's probably worth mentioning, even if it fairly obvious, that you could run the drum tracks through the PA after the initial capture as well. You know, like if you were worried about drum bleed in any possible future edits, or painting yourself into a corner.

I've done this several times, basically what's been said (sent the k, snr, and toms to two EAW's and it benefited the rm mics). When your doing this you need to be checking the polarity of your system and mics. You can tweak the reamped mix and really get something that works for the tune. Eric Valentine mentions doing this in a recent interview (w/ gtr amps) and the in the Metallica documentary "A year in the life," has Lars K through two subs next to his kit
