There are quite a few kinks albums that, to my ears didn't get the treatment they deserved. Probably 'rushed' more that badly engineered, but the efeect is about the same.

It's been a while since I've listened to The Brown Album, but to my recollection it has some pretty killer sounds on it.... drums in particular. Much better than what I've heard of their newest album.

All KISS albums sound bad, and there are many reasons for it.

Mellon Collie is sonically hit-and-miss. After that, the band's studio sound just gets weaker and weaker.

reg. Primus: to my ears it is a step TOO FAR in the right direction. Everything is just overdriven beyond tasty. Maybe it works better on vinyl? The CD just hurts.

reg KISS: if you have time, some specifics to why ALL Kiss albums sound bad, from an engineering standpoint. to me, Dressed to Kill, Revenge, Creatures of the Night, & Destroyer are sonic standouts for this group, not that you care

Are you serious? There are entire parts left off the stereo version of Piper. I grew up listening to the stereo version and had not heard the mono version until the re-release a couple of years ago. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I thought the mono record was SO MUCH better. It seemed so much more "realized" to me. And this was a record that I had absolutely LOVED all those years, too.

One thing I can't quite figure out is the edit at the end of "Flaming" where one whole chord was cut of the mono mix, but is kept in the stereo mix. That has got to be one of the best edits made in 1967 IMHO, but why the hell was it done? Did Syd just up and say " I don't like that one chord there. Can we cut it out?"

Not hip to that particular edit (and not super familiar with the album), but I have been told that during that time, the mono mix was the "important" one. Mono was the one that would get played on radio, most people still listened in mono, so that was the "serious" mix. So perhaps more care was spent on that, and the mono was more "after-thought?"
