TnC - ACM 1200 Bulldog mods - HELP!!!

Post by Nick Sevilla » Fri Feb 24, 2012 7:14 pm

Hi lovely forumites,

I own a stereo pair of the TnC ACM1200 tube microphones, for which I bought some Bulldog mods.

Now, I tried to mod them about 6 months ago, but tow things happened:

1.- I got lost in the attempt to do the mods. I simply could not understand their instructions. Read them now, and still cannot figure what the hell is supposed to go where, etc. The schematics are confusing, and badly labeled, plus I have not done microsurgery for a few years.

2.- I got busy. Really busy. So they sit in a plastic box with the old and new parts.

Anyone here has done the mods, and can give me a tutorial / hand?

Cheers

Oh yes I did... it does not clarify much of anything. There is one schematic for the various mods... mine is the 47 mod.
The issue has always been the lack of clarity in the schematic.
Specifically the tube pinouts.
There are also issues with the polarized capacitors, which are not shown in the schematic.
I was able to figure out the mechanical aspects of the construction, ie fitting the new tranny, modifying the board, etc.

So, in this case, a picture is worth only 850 words.

which schematic are you looking at? This one?:

C1 and C4 are the only polarized caps I see, and they're both showing the negative leg to ground (in the case of C1, through a switch). Not sure what the issue is here. The little diagram of the board on the right shows the orientation also.

As for the tube pinout: lmgtfy

seriously though, there's a diagram on the first page of this pdf.

Hi Nate,

I guess they updated their schematics.
I have the ones from 6 months ago printed out, and no wonder I could not figure it out.
None of the pinouts are on the old schematics!
I can see why I could not possibly get it to work.
I will try again to mod these mics...

I've tried emailing the guys at compassion studios twice to look into modding my 1200s. I didn't know if they were even still in business because they've never emailed back. Anyone know anyone over there? I really want to buy two of their kits. Actually I want the 67 mod but it still says "coming soon" for that one.

tnctransformers@tab-funkenwerk.com

Is this the email? It is for Oliver Archut, whi hand makes each transformer. You order from him. Be patient, he's very busy, so it can take a day or two for him to answer.

And it's Compass Point Studios... the studio in the Bahamas, which is closed now.
TnC stands for "Terry Manning and Chance Patacki".
I love these guys, they are very cool, great engineers and human beings.

My mistake, I don't know why I called it Compassion Studios. But yes, that was the email I used. This was months ago. I guess I'll give it another shot.

Thanks!

Just a little update since my last post. I did email tnctransformers@tab-funkenwerk.com again regarding the mic mods right after my last post and sadly never heard back. That was over 2 months ago. I guess I'll have to wait on this.

Anyone know of a different DIY mod kit for the 1200? I did email Joly, and he said he'd do it but I kinda want the experience and to save some money.
