Otari 5050 transport repair?

Post by bannerj » Sat Jun 30, 2012 10:48 am

Its an old mx5050 8 track. The stop button works when in play, but it doesn't when ff or rew.

Any quick obvious tweak to fix or do I need to hunt down someone who really knows these things?

Symptom like that in an Otari deck... first suspect is the relays. Otaris have lots of switching relays for control functions. They get gummy or corroded and fail. If you're brave, that's the first thing to look into. Those decks are densely built though, and you may be better off taking it to a tech who knows them.

Thanks. I'm not brave I guess. Got to find a tech in West Michigan.

I did realize that the reset button can get me by for awhile. Duh. But I bet overusing that'll wear something else out.
