Have you told your drummer about the missing tom shell?

And one question, what is the toilet paper on the lower right corner of the picture for?
I bet that's the secret filler for the really top end...

Actually from a kick shell; all mikeyc's idear.

The TP is for me omnipresent hay-fever, especially good i-net porn, and to cover any stray and itinerant NS10 tweeters.

Turns out, the counter-wight onna OnStageStands boom arm fits perfectly into the Ludwig tom clamp on the bass drum 1/2 from which I made the Reflect Shield.

seems heavy. Has that been a problem at all? I suppose if the shield is mounted as close to the vertical part of the stand as possible, it might not be too bad.

It is heavy enuff to wanna pivot down; it needs a counter-weight if ya leave it, but to do a cuppla songs, no prob.

That said, I'm gonna rig sompin' a little more permanent, I think.

I made one of these as well but I didn't use a drum shell (which is a great idea). My main purpose for the one I made is to use it as a hi hat baffle. I'm gonna hook mine up to a drum stand and place it between the hi hat and snare mic (I also just bought one of those primacoustic drum shield thingies too to use in conjucntion with). I have a session with a hardcore band coming up next weekend, which in my experience hardcore drummers are notorious cymbal bashers, so it should be a good test to see it will actually work with what I intend to use it for.

Densities?
I would think the sound would hit the wood shell and bounce back but what do I know

It's like anything successfully DIY, y'know?

Is it as "good" as commercial? Debatable ...

Is it as "better" than commercial? Debatable ...

Is it useful? Yes.

Is it less expensive? Yes?

Was it fun? Yes.

Does it continue to be useful and fun? Yes.

If you look at the pic's, you can see where I used some cheap plastic garden fence to make 1/2" air-pockets.

I've read the ads about why they have the holes in the theirs; mine has the screw holes left from the hardware as visible here:

That part about the holes, I'm thinkin', is probably just puffery; I could cut some, but really see/hear no need.

I will say that I was never really bothered by the vocal sounds I was getting in my bedio, but the shield does make for a cleaner vocal track, taking out a myriad of reflections I hadn't noticed before. It's early daze, but I think ultimately it will make the processing of my vocals (99% of the always, I use some kind of time-based effect) more consistent, and consistently repeatable.

Plus, you got to cut a bass drum in half. That alone makes the project worthwhile, no?

This thread has been bouncing around in my head for the past few weeks, and I finally think I realized why.

I bought a bunch of HDPE 55-gallon barrels cheap for a big rain-barrel project a while back, and I still have quite a few left over. It would be easy-sauce to cut them into rings (like your bass drum shell) and then in half again to mimic what you did. They would be lighter than wood but serve the same purpose... It would also be easy to drill a bunch of holes in it if need be... for puffery, of course.

I've got the materials to do all this sitting out in a barn, think I may give it a shot this weekend while the lady's at work...
