It Might Get Loud (the documentary/movie)

Post by digitaldrummer » Wed Jan 02, 2013 1:04 pm

Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White

if you haven't seen it yet, I think it was worth watching. I found it with my Blu-Ray player the other night but you can stream it on a computer too:

Thanks for the reminder. I keep forgetting about that movie.
That also reminds me that crackle now shows "From the Basement".
It's a show started by Nigel Godrich that features bands playing live in the studio. It's like microphone porn to me.

I liked it. Good mix of background/bio info, interview segments, and performance (both as individuals and together).

The Edge's outboard guitar gear and amp room was pretty coolio...

Yup saw it in theatres. FYI Jack White is just as crazy in person as he is in the movie...in case you were curious.

Does he have a little miniature version of himself next to him all of the time, wearing the same suit and hat?

I thought it could have used a bunch less history of each guitarist; anyone watching that movie would know those stories, or at least know the story behind the guitarists they liked. Either way, that info can be gotten elsewhere pretty easily. 15 minutes of history on 3 different players=45 minutes of a 90-minute movie about guitars wasted on not talking about guitars.

So, half of it was cool. Jack White's "inner child" bit was ridiculous and indulgent (ironic given that the other guitarists in the film were Edge and the dude who did the "Hermit" fantasy sequence from Song Remains the Same) and should have been left on the cutting room floor.

I kinda felt like everyone involved came off as self indulgent wankers. Jack White has always rubbed me the wrong way and the bit with the Edge playing guitar and fiddling with the memory man while standing on a cliff over the sea was so ridiculous it almost went all the way back around to being cool.
Then again, I'm not really big on the guitar hero thing so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

I did enjoy the bit where Page talks about his days as a session musician, especially the story about recording Goldfinger.

ok, if we are criticizing - anyone notice that they were playing the chorus from "the weight" incorrectly? Or maybe they were just tying to show us that The Band had played it wrong all these years?

sure, it was completely self-indulgent but i didn't go into it expecting anything less.

I think the moment where Jimmy Page starts playing "Whole Lotta Love" and Edge gets up to look closer and Jack White leans is freaking amazing. Even those two guy are completely blown away that Jimmy Page is standing right there playing that riff.

At the beginning of the first Page segment when he's playing through "Ramble On", my wife gets a boner every time.

I'm really hoping you mean that metaphorically, Jpp.

BTW, that version of The Vision was coolio (in your Avatar).
