Radioshack PZM Battery

Post by Drone » Sat Jan 19, 2013 2:14 pm

I've borrowed a friends PZM, I'm wondering is the extra voltage thing worth doing on a stock mic? I have a 12V garage door opener battery that I can wodge in there with some foil or a little spring. Is it worth it, and would the battery have enough current to last a session?

Yes and yes.

I used to rig a 9v to those, the leads from a standard 9v stomp box clip onto the ends of a dummy battery inserted, with a little hole cut in the plastic for the lead to come out, and a rubber band holding the 9v to the box. Looked mickey mouse, but did the DIY trick. Easy mod that makes a noticeable difference.

Higher voltage improves signal to noise and SPL handling. There's a mod (basically the same as the Tape Op DIY mic from way back) that replaces the circuit in that little battery box, adds 9v power and balanced output. Well worth the 20 minutes with a soldering iron.

Is there a model number somewhere on these? I was reading http://www.uneeda-audio.com/pzm/ and I can't find any numbers on this one.

Using a higher voltage is highly recommended. It's a whole different mic.

If it's the same as the ones I have you can snip the 1/4" audio ends and make them balanced. At least that's what I was told... I did it, then I modded the PZM so much it wouldn't work!
