Los Angeles Record Label/Recording Studio Seeks Intern

Hello... We are a recording studio/record label in Los Angeles. CA and
are currently looking for interns for both the office and studio.
Duties would include answering phones, running light errands
(Kinko's/Post Office/Fed Ex) and helping maintain the studio and
office space.

Specifically for the office we would need help with assisting the
Office Mgr. in all daily matters. We have an artists gearing up for a
new release and a Summer/Fall tour and the focus would be advancing
the tour and the new release.
Photoshop and Web Design skills would be a plus.

For the studio we're looking for someone to assist the House engineer
with set up and help with maintaining the studio. Pro Tools knowledge
a definite plus.

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to learn all aspects
of the music business. We're looking for someone who is motivated and
is willing to learn.

Hi, this job isn't relavent to me but it doesn't seem very clear as to whether you are looking for two separate interns or one person to fill both roles.

Sorry to be a stickler, but I think you mean "This internship is not a paying job."

A significant portion of internships have always been paid, and an increasing number of what have recently been unpaid internships are again beginning to pay at least minimum wage. This is partly because there have been some major crackdowns on illegal unpaid internships in recent years.

Under to existing labor laws, unpaid training is illegal if the intern adds any value to the company by doing anything that resembles paid work, such as: getting coffee, making copies, printing stems, going on runs, answering phones, doing errands, etc. Legally, that is all considered "work."

Many former interns and the DOJ have turned a blind eye for about a decade now, but that is beginning to change significantly. It's probably unlikely that the increasing crackdowns will center around small studios anytime soon, but it's definitely a good idea to know what's going on:

The Charlie Rose Show just lost a big lawsuit regarding unpaid interns, and now Fox Searchlight, Harpers and others are being brought to trial as part of class action lawsuits.

I'm not here to tell you how to run your business -- just to be careful, and aware. If you can afford a few bucks an hour for something that resembles an entry-level job, it may be a smart idea to pay it. The vast majority of studios did up until the early 2000s.

If you're wondering if your unpaid opening is legal, ask yourself this question: Does this resemble a regimented training program that is a major hassle for us and a quantifiable learning experience for the intern? If the answer is "no" on either of those conditions, it's probably against the law to be paying anything less than minimum wage.
