A Poll of Sorts: Michael Joly Questions

Post by Gregg Juke » Fri Jul 19, 2013 6:37 pm

Hello All,

If everything goes according to plan, it looks like I'll be doing a sit-down interview with Michael Joly in August, while I'm chillin' like a villain (whatever that is) in Cape Cod. I'll put together a podcast, but also some portion of the interview will appear right here at the Tape Op website as a bonus/extra feature.

So, while I have a bunch of things that I want to ask him myself, this is a good opportunity for y'all to ask any questions that you may have had burning in your very soul for Mike lo these many years. Microphone stuff, technical stuff, personal stuff, business stuff, controversy, but no trade secrets ("Say, how exactly do you do that one mod? Could I have a parts list and suppliers please?"-- No). Also, no Tiger Beat "What's it like to be Michael Joly?" questions. C'mon, feed me. What do you want to know?

Ask him about the significance of the size and type of the ribbon and magnet in regards to depth of sound field.

Ask him who, in his field, he considers peers.

Also, is his last name shortened from something else?

I might get flamed for this, but I'd like to know why his 990 mod isn't more affordable. I understand in the end you get a really nice mic back, but there are mics that cost less that sound just as nice.

Ask him what he thinks of the Microphone Parts 990 mods and others.

Also, what test gear does he use and what is his monitoring system to make subjective sonic decisions.

Most importantly, his favorite, or 'reference' mic preamp.

I'm curious what he'd say about the resale (and perceived resale) value of modded mics (and other gear even). There's a perception that you won't get your money back, but I think Mr. Joly is in a position to have more info on this. At least anecdotal. I like the other questions suggested as well.

Yeah, maybe it gets into "trade secrets" territory, but any gear (tools for fixing things, I mean, or whatever else) he finds indespensible, would be neat to know about and a photo of his personal work bench would be super fun to see.

I dunno, maybe all that stuff's out there already.

I'll be in Cape Cod in August too! Drop me a line. Would be cool to meet in person if we can arrange it. Good luck with the interview!

No, I get it, and I will ask, but if I was to venture a guess at an answer, I'd say that it's just expensive to make and sell basically hand-made goods, with quality parts. He has a bunch of people working for him now, but it's still not a huge multi-million dollar factory manufacturing process. And if there's hand-wiring involved, it's going to cost more...

Yes, that's true. But I've always been a fan of MJ's research and work, and I would love to have him do the PE thing on my 990; but the price has prevented me from doing that. No big deal really, I'm just sayin'...

I would live to get a recommendation for a mic mod "tool kit." I've heard him talk about little custom tools he made for headbasket modding and what not, so I'd love to hear about a most used tool list and start gathering stuff to make my mods easier.
