RIP Lou Reed

Post by Aj » Sun Oct 27, 2013 12:19 pm

Cranky, brilliant, irreplaceable.

Along with his great gift for melody (yes, melody!), he was one of rock's greatest ever lyricist. I hope he's remembered that way. Shit.

Lou Reed, a massively influential songwriter and guitarist who helped shape nearly fifty years of rock music, died today. The cause of his death has not yet been released, but Reed underwent a liver transplant in May.

Couldn't believe it when I heard it on NPR today.

:(

On the few and far between reviews I ever get, I'm compared.

More importantly, as irascible as he was, he's a main influence on me as a writer and vocalist.

Most important, I'm a huge fan, now with a broken heart, for now.

Yeah, for those of us of a certain age , hearing the Velvets marked a real turning point. They made "serious music" that was art, but also felt out of control and dangerous; basically, it still rocked. Feels like a big loss, this one.

He played a great "producer" role in that Paul Simon movie ("One Trick Pony").
