If you find somebody, let me know. I have (maybe) a similar issue that I can't figure out. My capstan (MX5050 BII) works intermittently. I recapped the capstan board, even changed out the relay.

Seems like it works better when standing up than laying on it's back, but I don't know. it's been bumming me out. I like it a lot when it works.

I'm (sort of ) on the west coast too.

Try MDI Precision Motor Works:

They rebuilt an Otari capstan motor for me a long time ago.

Yes, it was something like $350.00 - $450.00.

They also sold me a new pinch roller for $50.

Actually, looking more closely at my old e-mails it ended up being over $500 in my case, but there was some weird things going on with it that may not apply in your case.

Try blasting contact cleaner into the verispeed pot. My 5050 stopped running at high speed - when I switched to high the capstan would stop spinning. Toggling back and forth from low to high would sometimes get it going again. Turns out the fault is in the varispeed circuit and was mostly due to a dirty pot. Cleaning it helped a lot.

I can fix it..! Myself!

Post by creaturesleeper » Mon Jun 09, 2014 7:39 pm

I opened up the motor and discovered the sensor had come loose inside...the drive coils are fine. The sensor was jammed inside the motor but not damaged...crappy glue I guess. I just need to glue it back in and put it back together :-)

I just saw this now. Congratulations on the hopefully easy fix. If in need of teching, I would suggest checking with Chris Mara at Mara Machines/Welcome to 1979 (a sometimes haunter of this board)...

I put it back together and everything works as it should so far...I'll keep those techs in mind if I get boggled with something else!
