Everyone's different, I guess. I have almost the exact opposite experience from this.
When I was working with tape, which I never liked, I felt I got better overall sound using two stereo decks and a cheap Radio Shack mixer and bouncing back and forth over using one of the low-end four track tape decks. Not sure why now that I think about it. Maybe it was just a particularly bad four track.

One more thing, if I buy a unit from USA the power specifications are different, 120V and 60 Hz in USA but 230V and 50Hz in Europe. I guess I can get a power adapter, but will the frequency difference be an issue?

no problem with the freq difference,just get an adapter, it gets rectified to dc all the same (:
