Slate Pro Audio Fox Quadtone opinions?

Post by mrscary » Wed Sep 10, 2014 8:05 pm

I was looking for a 1073 type preamp and the fox quad tone seems like a very good value. I was also looking at the SCA N72 and Avedis MA5.

Hadly any reviews on forums though. Does anybody own this thing or have any experience with it? How close does it sound to a 1073 or a BAE/Heritage/AMS/one of the other 3000 clones?

I got a GAP 73 for free and put in some lower noise transistors and a nice Jensen output transformer. Sounds great, less filling.

Jim, I wish somebody gave me a free GAP73 to mess with!

I ended up buying the Quadtone, got a crazy good deal, I'll post my opinion of it when it comes in

So after recording some stuff through this thing over the last few days, I have to say it's a freakin' awesome preamp.

I don't have a vintage 1073 or a GML to compare it to, but both modes match the description very well and the combo modes are a nice bonus.

At some point I'd like to get my hands on one of those or high end clones to compare...

It sounds very "expensive" if that makes any sense. Glad I bought it.
