I look at Neumann making a new version of a classic mic similarly to big Hollywood studios rebooting favorite childhood franchises. Why do they bother? They always seem to mess it up. Neumann has used their name and their TLM series to part many fools from their money. Which in the end, is the reason most people can't afford U47's or 67's right now anyways: they weren't able to continue the streak of good ones, so the old ones cost too much.

If it comes with a beautiful wooden box and a signed certificate of authenticity including serial number printed on high-quality paper, it has to sound great.

Saw it at AES this past Saturday.
Could not, of course, demo it in the hall.
I'm glad they are building it again.
Now, if they only revitalized the metal tube mills...

There are a gamut of logical reasons a company decides to stop manufacturing a particular product; even if it is a "hit".

Here's my take: This is Neumann's chance to show whether or not they still have it.

They've had quite a number of products that have a variant model number of some known vintage model of theirs; where they'll say this was inspired by that, just as other mic manufactures do.

Many people are turned-off by most everything current Neumann and especially their TLM Series. Not me. I'm mostly turned-off by the pricing. I'm alright with the pricing of most their cardioid-only mics, but that's about it. Above that, Neumann is out of my mind since there are tons of other mics I much rather have.

It's much different this time. This they're calling a reissue. If Neumann still can't do it right to the tune of $4k, then they really can't do it anymore.

I also saw it at AES, and they had it rigged up next to an 87 and a 67 with headphones, so you could at least talk into it on the noisy exhibitors' floor and sorta get a feel for it. Based on that limited experience ??it sounds nice. Smoother top end and warmer bottom than the 87. But y'know, again, that's two minutes on a noisy con floor with headphones I don't know well...

When I had a booth at AES back in the 1990's, I would tell people to "listen to the accurately reproduced quality of the crowd noise" as a selling point.

If it's the original design without "improvements", I'm all for it.
Having something like that new from the factory would be great compared to a 30 year old mic that's been punished by 7 million kick hits and clumsy hands.

A friend of mine checked it out at AES and asked if it was surface mount or through hole and the guys at the Neumann booth had no idea.
